I was teetering between three and four stars. Perhaps it will take another visit to determine the outcome. I base the four stars on the quality of the food and that's it. The food was great though. Not being from the area, I am having a difficult time accessing all of these places buried behind strip malls. It is ashame becuase these places are losing out on tons of business. Either way, this place caters to a development in Mt. Pleasant called Park West. For a development strip mall joint, the food tasted great. We had pretty basic stuff though...chicken bowls and chicken dinners...served with fried rice and sauteed zucchini. The meat and veggies came out great...light sauce, not doused, and cooked nice and crispy and healthy. They also had a full selection of beers and sake, and also a sushi bar. One TV is up in the corner of the place as well. Good for families or the single diner. Saw lots of folks doing take out as well. Will definitely be back to sample other dishes or a quick order of rolls.

Clean & very nice service. I love the hibachi steak and my husband loves the noodle bowl.

Stopped in for lunch. Service and location are great. The sushi was good and with the location, it's a good option vs getting sushi at Publix. It won't keep me from going to Oriental Garden for my regular sushi fix.

Decent spring rolls and specialty rolls. Spectacular plum wine and location being walking distance from my residence. Prob stagger back for the plum wine.

The sushi is always fresh, consistent, and generously portioned. My favorite is the fantastic roll. The service is always good. As far as dining in, the restaurant is very small and fairly basic. More often than not, I get takeout.

Food was incorrect, sushi was very fishy and the over all take out experience was horrible. I won't go back and it's in my neighborhood.

I've been coming here since they opened. The sushi is always tasty and fresh and I have had the hibachi plenty of times. Great place for a quick meal and you can get better quality food compared to the "quick hibachi" places for a similar price. I often pick up an order on my way home or meet some friends for sushi. I'm not very keen on their white sauce though. Something with it is off. Other than that, I enjoy Umi as a local park west option. They have great lunch specials too.

This is specifically a review on their sushi. I've tried this place twice for takeout. I ordered sushi both times. All of the rolls I've had tasted like they sat out on a counter for an hour. They were quite bland and the textures were so off putting, I couldn't even finish the food. Trust me, I know what good sushi should look and taste like. I want to like this place because it's so close to my house. I am going to have to dine in one day there and give it one more try for sushi. But as far as their other food, I have heard from others that it's quite good.

Awful tonight. Soup looked like mop water and we wouldn't let the kids eat it. Sushi was not good. Don't know what happened but yuck. Oh, bud light was fine. Helped wash down skankie food.

I have eaten in twice and really enjoyed the experience both times. The first time I went I walked from my house to Umi Japanese and ordered chicken/shrimp hibachi. It was delicious and inexpensive. The second time I ordered Shrimp Hibachi and that was good as well. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a satisfying lunch!

NOT Japanese. The staff and cook are Chinese and therefore for food has a Chinese taste and flair.

Okay...as an FYI, this review is written from the stand-point of take-out. I cannot comment much on the dining in experience, but I certainly can rate the food taste, value, etc... We tried Umi for the first time a few weekends ago. I went with the Chicken Teriyaki (~$12.00) and split an order of Spring Rolls (~$3.00) with my wife who had the Ramen noodles ($8.00). The serving was pretty large with lots of chicken chunks, a fair amount of vegetables (green peppers, baby corn, cucumbers, etc..) and then a heaping mound of semi-flavored rice. It also came with this strange yet tasty pinkish mayonnaise based sauce that I used to dip my fork in for each bite. I had no idea what it was or if it was intended for my meal, but it seemed to compliment it, so I'd recommend you give it a try. I've found that takeout Asian food can be very hit or miss. Often times, restaurants use entirely too much grease and salt when cooking and you'll stomach will be hurting shortly after eating. However, I thought this was a pretty solid takeout choice. By no means is this the best Japanese Teriyaki I have had before, hence the 3 stars, but if you're in a pinch and don't feel like cooking, this is a pretty solid takeout place. Incidentally, there was so much food that I was able to have a sizable snack the next day with my leftovers.

4 stars is pushing it since the atmosphere is minimal, but I like it, private booths. Parking is easy. It is family run, and they care about guest satisfaction. Just had , tonight, the best meal I had there. habachi grilled steak (the cheaper version $10.50) with rice and veggies and wonderful dipping sauce. Reminds me of the old beef foundue of the 60's. the rice was excellent, the veggies were great, the dipping sauce is a favorite. The meat was tender and had a good taste. Portions are huge, two of us could have split this $10,50 entree and been full. the iced tea is also excellent, and fresh. Overall it is one of my favorites in the area -- less expensive, faster service than most, close by parking. In a shopping center next to a Publix food store. I think any reader would find it a good bet, at least try it and try the habachi items, much like the fancy and expensive japanese restaurants that cook in front of you. you get the food here with the show. And at half the price.
